Remind Your Mum How Much You Love her with a Gift of Chocolate this Mother's Day!

Only the best is good enough for your Mum this Mother’s Day, so celebrate this special day by saying 'I love you' with her favourite chocolates.

Mother’s Day (or any other day for that matter) gives us a chance to celebrate our Mums, but the date changes every year in the UK, so we can sometimes get caught out!

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 22 March, on the fourth Sunday of Lent in 2020, which is exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday, which is on 12 April.

Why do we celebrate Mothering Sunday in the UK?

The earliest Mother’s Day celebrations can be traced back to the ancient Greeks.  During the 17th century, early Christians in England celebrated a day to honour Mary, the mother of Christ, and later included all mothers.  Named Mothering Sunday and celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, this day honoured all mothers in England.

During this period, the underprivileged classes worked as servants for the wealthy and, as most jobs were located far from their families, the servants ‘lived-in’.  On Mothering Sunday, the servants were given the day off so they could return home to spend the day with their mothers.

How did Mothering Sunday become Mother's Day?

In 1907, an American called Anna Jarvis held a memorial for her mother, Ann Jarvis, a peace activist who treated wounded soldiers in the American Civil War.  Anna campaigned for a whole day to honour the role played by all mothers.  By 1911, all US states took on this holiday and in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day a national holiday.

This American festival, held much later in the year, has no religious connotations but before long it drifted across the Atlantic and our Mothering Sunday soon became more popularly knows as Mother’s Day in the UK.
