Today's Advent Calendar Tradition

Most advent calendars today don't have the religious content that refers to the four-week period beginning on the Sunday nearest the feast day of St. Andrew; the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus.

Nowadays, it is more commonly associated with the first mass-produced calendars printed in the early 1900's using scenes from the Christmas Story and other Christmassy images such as snowmen and robins.  Today, advent calendars can be anything from the latest trend in toys, beauty or jewellery products.  There's even advent calendars for your pets with dog and cat treats behind each door!
